Commitments

At the time of writing, both the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research Governing Board (NWO-AB) and the Technology Foundation STW have committed the amounts mentioned in section 5.1 (each 2.5 M). Probably, due to budget cuts and other priorities, at present the Ministry of Economic Affairs will fund only 2.5 M instead of the 5 M asked. Possibly, this situation may improve in the future but this remains to be seen later.

The financial consequences are as follows. The program budget will decrease from 13 M to 10 M and the matching funds from industry will decrease from 2.6 M to 2.1 M since they are dependent on budget available for research and the projects funded. The available budget for projects in the first round will remain as discussed in section 5.2 (total 4.6 M), but the budget for projects in the second round will decrease from 4.6 M to approximately 2.2 M. The budget for the VICI-style professor will probably remain the same (this is considered very important for knowledge dissemination), and the expenses for knowledge exchange activities and office cost and program management will also decrease from 1.3 M each to 1 M each since they are a percentage of the total available budget (see table 5.1(b)).

It can be concluded that especially the research budget for round 2 and the knowledge exchange activities will suffer from a budget cut.
