Collaborative research

One of the most important aspects of SENTINELS is that research projects are collaborative research projects. Universities and industry carry out the projects together. The projects are pre-competitive and tackle long-term problems.

Collaborative research means that industry participates in the research and contributes to the project. This can be done by providing financial or material support or by providing (own) research personnel. The size of the contribution depends on the type of research:

  1. Fundamental research: industry contributes at least 10% of the total budget of the research proposal;
  2. Method and tools research: industry contributes at least 25% of the total budget;
  3. Prototype research: industry contributes at least 40% of the total budget.
SENTINELS aims for a division between fundamental, method and tools, and prototype research of respectively 40%, 40% and 20%.
