Budget and management

The budget for SENTINELS is as follows. Participants, such as the Ministry of Economic Affairs (IOP and possibly other funds), the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Governing Board (NWO-AB), the Technology Foundation STW, industrial partners and universities have been asked for a total contribution of 13 M in total. From this amount, 10.4 M will be spent on financing research (part on a VICI-style professor in information security), 1.3 M on office costs and program management, and 1.3 M on knowledge exchange activities.

Program management is done using a combination of Steering Group/Program Committee form using the successful management methods from the Technology Foundation STW's PROGRESS research program. Daily management is done by a Board which is assisted by a Program Office. Project selection and project management (including knowledge trade and monitoring of progress) is done according to the usual Technology Foundation STW's procedures.

The economic importance of secure ICT, networks and information systems is tremendous since many organizations are victim of attacks. Their costs are difficult to estimate, as organizations are reluctant to disclose how much damage is done by inadequate security. The research described in this proposal is very important for Dutch industry, which can be seen e.g. by the letters of intent written by major industries appended to the end of this proposal.
